Golden muga silk is the rarest and most luxurious silk, once reserved exclusively for the royal families of the kingdoms surrounding the Bay of Bengal. There is no artificial cultivation and its cocoons can only be collected in the wild. It is considered "ahimsa" silk or "peaceful" silk because the cocoons are only picked after the moths have grown up and flown away, meaning no living creature is harmed. The silk roving is sourced directly from a weaving village in Odisha that has specialized in producing wild silk for generations. This roving is soft, fluffy, and has an intense sheen, with a staple length of 6" to 8". It can be spun into a beautiful golden yarn or mixed into your favorite fiber blend. A small amount of golden muga silk can be dissolved in a homemade soap recipe to give it a luxurious, silky feel fit for a king or queen.
This fabric made of natural wild muga silk has a distinctive structure and hue. The fabric surface is smooth, but when examined up close there is a very fine, irregular stripe, the result of miniscule differences in the thickness and color of the thread. The shade of this muga silk resembles that of natural, undyed linen. Though it slightly resembles cotton to the touch, it is noticeably lighter and has the slight, matte sheen, typical of wild silk. In spite of its fineness, muga silk is strong and quite durable.
This silk makes a wonderful shirt, blouse, or gown. It's interesting on its own and can look great in even the simplest of pieces. Choose it for airy dresses, throws, kimonos, and anything you might make with rayon or cotton linen. Keep in mind that Muga silk doesn't have the drape of other silks; in fact, it's stiffer than it is soft. It holds its shape well and is easy to cut and sew. This is a great silk for beginners who are just starting to work with silk.
