What Is a Silk Tie?

Types of Silk Ties
Woven Jacquard Silk Tie
The design is woven together into the tie material. This means that for each color in the tie pattern, a different colored thread is used. This approach typically results in thicker tie material.
Printed Silk Tie
The design is printed onto the silk fabric. This approach allows for more flexibility in design (can do colors in gradations) and can allow for a thinner tie material.

Shell
Also known as the “envelope”, because it is the outermost material of the necktie. This maintains the overall shape of the tie itself.
It can be made out of almost any type of fabric, like cotton, linen, polyester satin, wool, or silk. Since it is the main thing you move around when you make a tie knot, it is important to make sure that it is made of high-quality material. Generally, when a tie is made of high-quality fabric, it will yield a better tie knot, nicer dimple, and drapes better.
Seam
Most neckties are made from two to four fabrics sewn carefully together to achieve how long a tie should be; whether its standard length or extra long ties.
That is why you will commonly find a seam about halfway along the back of a tie. This seam should not be visible when a knot is made.
Another indication of a quality patterned tie is if the fabrics are aligned to match the design seamlessly.
Care & Origin Tag
This contains important information about the tie. Usually, it shows the country where the tie was made from, the materials used, and special care instructions.
Label
It displays the brand or manufacturer of the tie. Since it's usually placed under the keeper loop, some men also use the label to secure the narrow end of the tie.
Label and keeper loops have the same function. The existence of a Label or Keeper loop can make the necktie fully functional. The cost for buyers to use Label is higher than the Keeper loop, but it can make your necktie Stand out.
Keeper Loop
The self-loop, or 'keeper loop' is the loop that holds the necktie tail. On most neckties, buyers usually require us to make the Keeper loop with the same fabric as Shell. In a few cases, buyers will add the brand label (It is the Label Now) when designing Keeper Loop to make your tie design unique; of course, this will incur extra fees (Because of the necktie fabric and Keep loop fabric need to be woven alone). In rare cases, buyers will ask us to add both (keep loop and Label).
Bar Tack
This is the heavy stitch at the back of the tie that holds the two folded sides together. It also helps to maintain the tie's shape.
Tip Lining
- The tip lining or also called as the “tipping” is the material sewn to finish the tip and tail of the tie.
- 'Decorative-tipping' uses a fabric different from the shell of the necktie, and the fabrics available on the market are usually polyester. "Decorative tipping" is generally used for cheap ties.
- 'Self-tipping' uses the same fabric as the Shell and completes the cutting together with the Blade, Tail, and neck.
- 'Logo-tipping' generally uses the same fabric material as the shell but not the same design; its fabric weaving and cutting are separate from the shell. 'Label-tipping' will add more hours to workers.
Different Fabrics of Ties
Viscose And Polyester
The cheapest ties will be made out of Polyester, or Viscose. These ties can be shiny, with no texture, and when paired with a quality jacket or suit, can lower the overall effect of your outfit. Instead of viscose and polyester, we recommend natural materials should be chosen, like silk, wool, or cashmere.
Silk
Silk ties are durable and will last a lifetime if they are correctly looked after. Draping beautifully around the neck, silk ties can come in a variety of textures including printed, grenadine, or shantung. As one of the most luxurious fabrics, silk looks great with all suits, no matter what fabric they are made with; linen, wool, or cashmere. They are the most formal ties.
However, not all silk is the same quality. Often, ties that are lined with a very thick fabric have poor quality silk which is very thin, the lining is thick to give the impression that the tie is of great quality. But keep in mind that the quality of the tie is not defined by its thickness.
Wool

How Do You Look After Your Silk Tie?
First and foremost, you should choose a tie that's of good quality and will last a long time. Preferably, the back of a tie is made of the same fabric as the front. Ties made in this way are called self-tipped, and are usually more expensive and of better quality.

Undoing the Knot
The most important factor that makes for a long-lasting tie is that you always untie after use. Carefully loosen the knot and gently undo it. If you pull too hard, you'll shorten the life of your tie. Once the tie is untied, hang it up, or roll it loosely in a small drawer compartment.
Ironing
Lay the tie out fully before you start ironing, and make sure there's nothing uneven underneath it, as it can leave ugly marks. A silk tie is easily burnt by an iron that's too hot, so you should always iron with a piece of cloth between the iron and the tie. Also, you should always start ironing on the lowest heat. Use a lot of steam, as it's very effective at getting creases out, but be very careful not to allow large drops of water to drip onto the tie, as they can create water stains you might not be able to get out. If the creases aren't coming out, increase the heat and the amount of steam slightly. As a last resort, you can try ironing the tie directly, but then you have to accept the risk that it might not survive the experience. The best solution would be to use an iron with high steam pressure but relatively low heat. This won't damage the tie, and the steam will dissolve most creases.

In addition to creases, stains are the biggest threat to nice, smart ties. We all know how easy it can be to accidentally dip your tie in your soup, so you have to be ready for accidents to happen. In the case of stains as in that of creases, it's important to be careful when removing them from your tie in order not to destroy it. A basic rule is to scrape off the food or sauce with a knife or spoon first to get rid of as much as possible as soon as you can. Then, take a cloth with cold water and rub. For stains with a lot of colour, you can add salt to the stain so that the colour is absorbed. If you can, dry the tie immediately so you're not left with a water stain. If you're in a restaurant, try using the hand dryer in the toilets.
You can find alcohol-based stain removers that work on wine and grease stains. Never wash a tie in the washing machine, as it will become unusable. In some cases, you can take your tie to the dry cleaners.
