Real silk v fake silk: what's the difference

Silk is a noble and delicate fabric that requires special care when ironing to avoid damage. Here are a few silk ironing tips:

1. Preparation

Before you start ironing, first check the washing label of the silk garment to find out the manufacturer's recommended ironing method and temperature. In general, silk should be ironed at a low temperature, usually between 110-120°C (230-248°F).

2. Use a steam iron

A steam iron is an ideal tool for ironing silk because it provides the necessary moisture to help the silk fibers regain their shape while reducing the physical pressure on the fibers. When using a steam iron, keep the iron at a certain distance from the surface of the garment to allow the steam to naturally penetrate the silk.

3. Use an ironing cloth

When ironing silk, you can place a thin layer of cotton or silk cloth on the garment as an ironing cloth. This prevents the iron from directly contacting the silk and reduces possible gloss marks or burns.

4. Ironing Tips

- Temperature Control: Set your iron to the lowest temperature, usually the Silk or Low Heat setting. If your iron has a variable temperature control, aim for a temperature of around 110-120°C (230-248°F).

- Quick Moves: Apply light pressure and move the iron quickly. Avoid staying in one spot for too long to prevent the silk from burning or causing shiny spots.

- Iron the Wrong Side: Iron the wrong side of your silk garment whenever possible. This helps prevent any potential damage, such as flattening decorative details or causing shiny spots on the front side.

5. Avoid Common Mistakes

- No Direct Contact: Avoid direct contact between the iron and the silk surface, which can cause shine marks or burns.

- Don't Over-Wet: While silk requires a certain amount of moisture to iron, over-wetting can cause shrinkage or distortion.

By following the above tips, you can iron your silk garments effectively while minimizing damage to the fiber. Remember, patience and meticulousness are the keys to successful silk ironing.
